How to Write Melodies You Love & New Video

Hi Lionheart,

I've got a VIDEO for you! Watch my studio performance recorded for NPR's Tiny Desk Contest at Danbro Studios, Brooklyn, New York City.

With:
Justin Mathews - guitar
Jay Sanford - bass
Cinque Kemp - drums

Story:
I wrote this song while staying in a Romani Gypsy caravan at the Festival de Django Reinhardt in Samois sur Seine, France, and with artists in Paris and London. The music combines crunchy, wistful, and hopeful Gypsy jazz chord voicings and progressions inspired by the music at Samois sur Seine.

The lyrics are about seeing things in new perspectives. As a musician, I'm hyper aware of what I hear. I asked my hosts how they perceive the world around them.

A mathematician said he sees geometry throughout all the rooms he enters, from the doorways to the furniture. A painter said she sees different shades of colors in blades of grass.

How do you take in the world around you, Lionheart?

PULSES
Lyrics:
VERSE 1
Looking out through lashes
And marks of their veils
Seeing only crashes
Of color so pale

PRECHORUS
Shatter horizon
Observe the sight
Come to awaken
Vision so bright

VERSE 2
Bending now through pulses
Beams play in shape
Conquering truth
But only the life they create

PRECHORUS
I cried, "I love you"
Into this light
My words burst into
Stars in the night

CHORUS
I taught my eyes to love
I gave my heart
I carried what I saw
In my arms
